[HC] Importing SND
(Msg 1 of 12)

Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to export WAV or AIFF into a suitable format
for use with a HyperCard stack. Does anyone have experience in how to
convert modern sound files to the correct format?

Also, I would like to know of an easy way to import those sound resources
into a stack. I have seen mention of ResCopy, but I cannot find a download
for the stack.

Thanks,
TT

Resource forks have been abandoned in OSX, there is no modern way to make them. If you like, however I have a free OS8.6 program (I now forget the name) which converted aiffs to System 7 resource files and back. If you would like it, let me know and I will hunt it up and send it to you.

All the best -Will

Use this:

http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~franke/SoundApp/

And for ResEdit:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TA48312

(use ⌘F to find the link)

Hmm, the download links on that page don't work. Try this page instead:

Thanks Rebecca, SoundApp looks good.

Are there any other alternatives to using ResEdit for importing into a
stack? It's kind of a pain to use for a large number of sounds.

If I recall correctly there was a HC Utility stack called ResCopy?

Or maybe it was part of PowerTools? It had the same sort of interface
as DA Mover - or have I completely lost the plot?

Oh, yes, I had forgotten. There is a Resource Mover card in the Power
Tools stack that will do the trick, and it does look just like Font/DA
Mover.

Yes, I did try the PowerTools stack, however, it appears it only moves
between stacks or applications to stacks. I am trying to move sound out of
individual files, thus so far the only tool I have found to work is RedEdit.
It works OK, however it is tedious for transferring many sound files from
individual files. Would ResCopy be able to move resources from files?

Command-option-click one of the Open buttons. That line that says "put
true into readOnly"? Yeah, delete that. :)

Now do the same with the other Open button, if you want.

Now open the card script and search for "if readOnly then" (no quotes
of course). Change the following "else" to "else if there is a stack
FileName then".

Now go crazy. :D

Of course if you'd rather just script it, the syntax of the XCMDs used
by Resource Mover is right there at the end of the card script. :)

Thanks Rebecca,

I made the modifications, but I found what was throwing me off. I modified
the scripts for the open button to take out the "option key" portion. I am
currently using an emulator, so I think the key-mapping for the option key
is wrong. Your suggestions pointed me in the right direction. Now it is
much easier to transfer resources into my stacks!

In case somebody is still looking for ResCopy, here's the newest version I have:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/34351/ResCopy%202.0.zip

Note that I zipped this on OS X, so you'll have to unzip it on OS X, then copy over to OS 9 or the resource fork won't come along.

Cheers,

Thanks Uli, do you happen to have any earlier versions (1.x compatible) as
well?
