Steve Jobs died.

We all know what Steve has meant to us. All I can say is thank you Steve.

Thanks for the blast-from-the-past, Catherine.
It's what has been on my mind since hearing about Steve's passing.

Not very well concealed "sj@[redacted].com. And it is true to say that Pixar did not cancel HyperCard.

To be fair, he was getting bombarded at his Apple email address even
though he responded from Pixar.

I was surprised at how upset and depressed I was when I learned of his
death.

Those of us in this group obviously weren't happy with his handling of
HyperCard, but he was a great man who profoundly changed the world of technology
for the better.

Me too. I didn't quite understand why. He definitely made an impact on
an awful lot of people though, I was looking at all the memorial flotsom
that people are leaving outside the Apple stores.

I hope Apple will be okay without him.

I hope so too, but I have my doubts. Tim Cook is a superb manager, and
I'm sure they'll be okay in the short term, but in the long term I'm more
doubtful as I don't think he's a visionary like Steve.

When Walt Disney died, the company thought they could continue by "doing
what Walt would have done", but the results were dismal for many years.
Their leadership was timid and afraid to step out from Walt's shadow; just the
opposite of Walt who was known for taking huge risks and for following his
gut instinct even when everyone else thought he was crazy.

Likewise Steve was known for taking big risks and not giving a damn if
everyone else -- even his collegues at Apple -- thought he was crazy. I'm not
sure that Tim Cook will be up to that. We'll see.

Thanks for the picture Catherine, it reminded me of the duality of my regard for the man.

He brings to mind the expression "Love him or hate him, you can't ignore him" - but modified to "Love him and hate him, you can't ignore him."

My love was the greater - not just for the Macs and iDevices over the years - but also because I feel that the HyperCard community owed its existence to his having bundled HC freely with many generations of Macs.

Had HC been a paid-for product at commercial prices, many of us who populated this list over the years would never have found it.

As an agnostic, I have no use for the phrase "rest in peace" as I believe everyone's remains will do so until we get recycled.
However the R.I.P. acronym can be modified to read
May he be - - Remembered Into Posterity.

While this is true, it happened to be free during the time that Steve was at NeXt.
