I haven't been as excited over a personal breakthrough on Hypercard
usage in a long time. However, sitting in front of my 21.5" iMac
running Snow Leopard and debugging Hypercard scripts on a big window
-- WOW!
When Lion came out I finally decided that I had better abandon my
Silver Door G4 before it died on me. That machine would not only run
Classic, it would boot 9.2.2, although I haven't done that for a long
time. But the handwriting was on the wall.
Before buying my iMac I researched SheepShaver and decided I could
(probably) hack it. What I read sounded promising. So for a while I
ran my more modern apps on the new machine and HC (and other apps) on
the old one. It was a pain to download data on the iMac and then send
it to the old machine for processing, which I did every day.
As soon I was sort of organized on the iMac I downloaded SheepShaver
and read the documentation, several times. I keep all kinds of stuff
and so wasn't too surprised to find an install disk for Mac 8.5,
which turned out to be a big win. After all too many attempts I
finally got it all working, and I love it.
The screen is 1600 by 900 pixels, bigger than my old glass monitor,
and scripts run faster. I'm a happy camper. Does it crash from time
to time? Well, sure, but then so did Classic on my G4 under Tiger.
There's an interesting overview by TidBITS writer Matt Neuberg at
http://db.tidbits.com/article/10679To get started, go to
http://www.emaculation.comand download the guide for Mac OSX. This has the information needed,
though some times I had to read it carefully to find out just what
they meant. I would say that this whole thing is not for the faint
of heart.
There's a helpful forum at
http://www.emaculation.com/forum/where I quickly got answers to questions.
Good luck!
