RunRev runs itself as if it was a business. It isn't ideal for hobbyists, but if you use the tool for client work even the most expensive version pays for itself in a week or less.

One good thing about the high costs is that there's a better chance of the company staying around, continuing to develop the tool.

Another question: why do they keep discontinuing their products? I started out with Dreamcard. After some months the product was discontinued, so I bought Rev Studio which was later discontinued also. This is one of the reasons I am not using the software any more. The other reason is the "horribly expensive" price. So I've made up my mind to continue with Supercard.

Any determined hobbyist can legally use metacard, it has a 10 line script limit, but that just forces one to code efficiently.

I do have a runrev license, and have used other rev products in their trial versions and have never had any difficulty either with their pricing or with their trial editions.

So far as I understand supercard is mac only, and will not run under linux or windows unless one uses an emulator and even then I am not sure if it would run.

It's a small company that needs to stay in business. As the customer
base grows, the price can come down. They currently they have a
rent-by-the-month option that allows you to manage costs a little better.

Well I reckon the cost is prohibitive to me, and it certainly puts me off. I still run my company on Hypercard and would love to port to another program if it does what I need it to do.. but as a rank amateur I find Hypercard forgives the unsophisticated programmer. I really don't know if LiveCode is the solution and the cost really looks out of whack with what I pay for other software. Perhaps a cheaper price would attract more users.

As the product line evolves, users are given the option of upgrading. In many cases, upgrades were automatically applied for equivalent products.

What did RunRev say when you inquired about upgrade options?

I think the price difference is less than $50, and as nice as SC is LiveCode bundles both Mac and Windows for its base price, which is roughly on par with other cross-platform products like RealBASIC and a fraction of some Windows-only products like Toolbook.
