[HC] Finder/Mac OS Replacement Stack
(Msg 1 of 8)

I remember reading about a stack(s) that tried to replace the regular
Finder with a HyperCard stack that sounded fairly impressive. What was the
name of it, and is there an example/download of it available online?

Thanks,
Tom

There was one called Hyped, and one called Hackintosh NT. I know this
because I created the former, and Tyler Vano created the latter. I don't
know if Hackintosh NT is still available, but Hyped, like all my old
crapware, can still be downloaded from

It was possible to use hypercard itself as the finder prior to o.s. 7.

Really? Was it any good? How would I do that?

[HC] Finder/Mac OS Replacement Stack

System 6 had a menu item in the Special menu under simple Finder, where you could choose the application you wanted to launch into at startup if you didn't want to boot into Finder. With MultiFinder and startup items in System 7, it wasn't really needed anymore for most users. The only way there was to replace the Finder in your system folder. I think you had to name your application (in the case of a HyperCard stack, a standalone saved from that stack) "Finder" and give it the same type and creator code ('FNDR' and 'MACS', I think...?) to make it work, but apart from that, Finder was pretty much just a normal application.

On Mac OS X it's even easier, as you just place a copy of a modified plist in ~/Library/LaunchAgents: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/technotes/tn2062/_index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/DTS10003090-CH1-SECTION4 So you could probably do this to point your Mac at a SuperCard or LiveCode standalone and replace the Finder that way.

Cheers,

Urk. Meant to write "single Finder", being the predecessor to MultiFinder, which was an option in System 5 and 6, then became the only option in System 7.

In one of the low level start up dialogs you designate the finder; I Think you may have to rename hypercard "finder" to do it.
