Possibly, just possibly, the advent of Open Source, Free, Universal Livecode will be the ultimate death of Hypercard.

Richmond.

I just wrote a large project in HC for my business, a client/server gadget running on ten G4's. I did it because the foundation was already in place, having several other apps on line in a similar environment. And because I have not played much with sockets in LC, whereas in HC, I can simply send a message to other programs (HC) running on other machines. This command is not supported in LC, (though it is listed in the dictionary) and it is one I use a lot.

I spend quite a bit of time with my old, and new, HC stuff, but I do this within my own walls, so to speak, and will likely do so for quite some time. HC cannot be killed, or orphaned, more than it already is. Long live HC, but it is legacy, pure and simple, living only among individuals like myself.. And you.

An open source LC will insure that the xTalk world will live and flourish, and that is more important than anything else.

I think the only thing that will kill HyperCard is the absence of any
hardware/software combination to run it on. I have a client, for example,
who has purchased several 1990s Macs so he will always have one that can
run it. The application he wrote, and that I help him with periodically, is
huge. It would take a long time and cost a lot of money to convert to
LiveCode. My guess is he'll retire before doing that.

You know they called HyperCard 3.0 "rise of the phoenix". Maybe they meant an open source LiveCode by that.

Cheers,
