Ugh. all the hypercard 1.x files I am finding are .cpt or .imag, and I am not able to mount them on my windows 8 netbook (it's crippled ugh ugh ugh).

If someone could send me the hypercard help stack from hypercard 1.x (1.0-1.25) i would be really grateful. I do have a cpt of the file and imag files too but cannot open them.

Thanks in advance,

eric.engle@yahoo.com

Hi Eric,

I fired up my Macintosh Classic (luckily it still works, my Macintosh Plus
possibly fused the entire house when I used it a few days ago...) and got
the contents of the 'HyperCard Help' disk for HyperCard 1.1, which contains
three stacks: Help, Help index and Help Samples. I'll send it to you
privately as a Zip (I assume attachments don't work on this group) , which
Windows 8 will be able to open, however I'm not sure if the resource forks
for the stack work with Zip files. I can send as a Sit (which I believe
works with resource forks, can anyone clarify this?) instead, let me know
if that would be better.

Regards,
Andrew

It doesn't matter much if you preserve the resource fork or not, since Windows will ignore it.

Thank you for sending me the stacks; odd point, the graphic images on the cards are not there. I do recall that the graphic images were imported in metacard 2.2.5, no? I know the bitmaps on hypercards are not in the resource fork, so i dunno why the images got eaten. maybe they are set to invisible? I haven`t tried to look for them too hard, because of

HTML5 standalone builder on livecod

I am gonna be the first to compare HTML5 to ...

ADDMOTION!

anyway when they finally get the bugs worked out -- and they better have ask and answer dialogs... then i will have some nice educational stacks to share. :)

Hi,

Well, it seems that importing HyperCard stacks is completely broken in
newer versions of LiveCode (or, alternatively, versions of LiveCode not
running on Mac OS X). Trying to import the HyperCard stacks in LiveCode 7
or 8 on a Linux laptop caused LiveCode to crash completely and quit.

Luckily my school has an older (5.5) version of LiveCode running on Mac OS
X, and using it I was able to import the stacks with graphics. I will send
you the imported stacks saved in the LiveCode format (which can then be
open using later and non-Mac versions of LiveCode).

Has anyone tried importing HyperCard stacks using new versions of LiveCode
recently (I will file a bug report soon, but would appreciate confirmation
from others). Eric, what version of LiveCode are you using?

Andrew

I am using livecode 8 (beta) and 6 - at first i thought it was 8, but nope even on 6 the joy is limited.

Thank you for sending me the updated stacks!

The most common reason for crashes when importing an HC stack is that it hasn't been compacted (which has to be done in HC) or that the file is malformed somehow. File damage is common if the stack wasn't zipped before sending over the Internet. Or it may be that the original floppies were no longer accurate, I know most of mine became unreadable after some years.

thank you for telling me that.

one thing I am wondering, why doesn't livecode just bundle the revlet plugin into the browser object which is now an integral part of livecode? sure it would not solve All the problems *but*
1) the revlet seemed to work just fine!
2) unlike the html5 ....

I am not on the livecode listserver so that is why i say it here.

The plugin was deprecated years ago when plugins went out of vogue, and
people stopped wanting to use them (and companies forbid them.) I'm
guessing it wouldn't work any more now that browsers have changed so
much since then.

The HTML5 addition is still in development and is barely at alpha stage,
so it shouldn't be judged yet. It has a ways to go before it is useful,
and is available right now primarily for testing purposes. All features
have not yet been implemented and much is still missing, it's a work in
progress.

It just keeps throwing exception errors.

I was not suggesting using the extension in a browser like firefox or explorer;I was suggesting using the extension in metacards browser object, i.e. in the native browser object which is now part of livecode.

The LC/MC browser *is* the OS browser. It just hooks into that and
provides a view of whatever the browser app generates. On Windows it
hooks into IE, on Mac it hooks into Safari. I'm not sure what it uses
for Linux.

Hm. I had the impression in addition to invoking a browser you can also use a bundled browser
https://livecode.com/use-the-web-browser/
namely, chromium.

idk. revlet actually worked.

Oh right, sorry, I forgot about the new CEF browser. I haven't needed to
use that yet. I suppose you could try the old plugin with it and see
what happens, but I'm pretty sure there will be some issues. If you can
wait for HTML5 to be completed you'll probably be happier.

We've probably pushed the patience of the HC list; you might want to
join the LC forums for LC discussions.
